Introduction

The School of Church Communications of the Pontifical University of Holy Cross (Rome) convenes a two-day conference for the Alumni students in India, on “Communicating faith in India. New trends in digital and audiovisual resources”. It is indeed, the first venture in any of the Asian countries in the history of the pontifical University of Holy Cross.

In India, University of Holy Cross has 45 Alumni students from different parts of the region, respectively belong to various dioceses and congregations. University of Holy Cross assumes it as a time of great joy of reunion remembering the legacy of Santa Croce.

In World Day of Social Communications message 2019, Pope Francis says; the internet provides the “opportunity to share stories and experiences of beauty or suffering that are physically distant from us, in order to pray together and together seek out the good to rediscover what unites us,”. He explaines, “the Church herself is a network woven together by Eucharistic communion, where unity is based not on ‘likes,’ but on the truth, on the ‘Amen,’ by which each one clings to the Body of Christ, and welcomes others,”. Pope Francis was emphasizing that social media does not replace the need in the human heart for authentic human community.

Finally, recalling the words of Pope Francis to the Catholic Journalists, that ‘in an age when technology is ever-evolving, Catholic news organizations must be willing to adapt to proclaim the Gospel to all effectively, and authentic servants of tradition are those who, while keeping memory alive, know how to discern the signs of the times and open new path’. Pope summons us to evangelise the world through encounters in the ‘digital world’, updating ourselves in the field of media.

Thus, this Alumni Conference has a couple of aims connected with the School of Church Communications and refresh our minds with sharing of our experiences and challenges that we face during the mission, and of course with some inputs in the field of Digital and Audiovisual communication.
