"Tra il 1993 ed il 2004, anni della mia permanenza all’Università, prima da studente e poi da professore associato, ho conosciuto gente meravigliosa proveniente da svariati Paesi. Gente di diverse culture ma con il denominatore comune della fede cattolica, fonte perciò di armonia e di mutua comprensione. Penso che questa esperienza mi ha aiutato anche a guardare diversamente alla mia nazione. Fu proprio in quegli anni che si verificò il genocidio nel vicino Ruanda. Da parte sua, il Congo (prima Zaire) conobbe diverse catastrofi naturali, incidenti, stragi e guerre che sono ancora tutt’oggi in corso. Dall’interesse degli altri per un Paese che non fosse il proprio, ho imparato ad amare la mia nazione in un modo, direi, più giusto. Tra il 1996 ed il 1998, anni in cui la guerra civile in Congo aveva raggiunto il suo picco, mi trovavo a lavorare intensamente alla tesi per la laurea in filosofia. Avevo quindi poco tempo a disposizione e malgrado tutto dovevo mantenermi informato. Laurent ed Henri, due amici francesi, si incaricaricarono di sottopormi le pagine più interessanti dei giornali di quel periodo, in modo che con il loro aiuto guadagnavo tempo. È anche capitato che qualche notizia mi sia stata fornita in modo selettivo, per risparmiarmi preoccupazioni in quel momento.

"Another unique aspect of this University is the sincere interest that is taken in the spiritual formation of its students. During my time there, the opportunity to grow in one’s spirituality was continually reinforced by the talks and lectures given by the teachers. In addition, Religious services and spiritual recollections were frequently organized, and these helped to foster a spiritual atmosphere amidst our theological studies. Admittedly, I find myself all the more grateful for the spiritual atmosphere of the school much more now than I did while I was a student at Santa Croce".

"I want to express my appreciation for having had the opportunity to study at a University that so strongly believes in and maintains the traditions of the Catholic Church. (…) The Church’s customs and teachings have been an integral part of Her culture until now, and they will continue to be so for many years to come. As a student at Santa Croce, these traditions were made all the more relevant for me by the requirement that priests and religious wear their clerics for classes and all other academic events. While it is true that the habit does not make the monk, it is nevertheless necessary that a monk be identifiable by his habit. The University’s faculty and professors were always in their clerics, which provided a great example for the rest of us. The constant external reminder that one’s clerics provide helps the students remain ever conscious of their religious vocation".

"Mis respetos por su seriedad y profundidad académica, por sus maestros, biblioteca… Pero mi experiencia va más allá de eso, la Universidad significó un espacio rico en el encuentro con la persona. El salón de clase, las oficinas de servicio, los pasillos, el bar, etc., siempre fueron espacios oportunos para cultivar la fraternidad, las experiencias de vida y de trabajo no sólo entre los compañeros, sino también entre alumnos y maestros. Cómo no recordar la cercanía del Rector, del Secretario general, del Decano de la facultad y de maestros que preguntaban cómo estás, qué noticias tienes de tu familia, de tu diócesis o, simplemente, comentar sobre el partido de futbol. Además, las buenas relaciones nacidas del contexto académico siempre iban más allá de los tiempos de clase.
"(…) Otro elemento importante para mí fue el CRIS, que como centro romano de ayuda espiritual, nos unía no solo a sacerdotes de la Universidad, sino también de otras instituciones con el fin de alimentar nuestra formación espiritual y humana. No puedo dejar de mencionar la oficina encargada de gestionar apoyos económicos para las becas de los alumnos, que tocando al corazón de tanta gente hacían posible que muchas diócesis tuvieran estudiando ahí a sus sacerdotes y laicos".
