International Conference on Human Ecology: Dwelling and Care

On April 14, 2026, the research project “Towards a culture of care” in collaboration with the Università Pontificia di Salamanca, will host the International Conference entitled “Human Ecology: Dwelling as Care for the Environment and Relationships.
In a time marked by profound environmental, social, and anthropological challenges, the concept of human ecology has emerged as a key framework for rethinking the relationship between the human person, the environment, and society. This conference invites scholars and practitioners to engage in a rich interdisciplinary dialogue that goes beyond a purely technical understanding of ecology, embracing its social, relational, cultural, ethical, and spiritual dimensions.
At the heart of the conference lies a renewed understanding of dwelling as an act of care—care for our common home, for others, and for ourselves. Dwelling is presented not merely as a material or economic condition, but as a deeply human practice that fosters relationships, safeguards creation, and promotes more just, inclusive, and supportive forms of coexistence.
The conference is part of the three-year research project “Towards a Culture of Care: A Response to the Anthropological Crisis,” which seeks to articulate a comprehensive and forward-looking culture of care capable of addressing the pressing challenges of contemporary society.
The program features plenary lectures by internationally renowned scholars, alongside thematic sessions of selected papers presented through a Call for Abstracts. Contributions will address a wide range of topics, including:
-
dwelling as care for others from philosophical, anthropological, and theological perspectives;
-
the relationship between human ecology and the environment, from sustainability to ethical responsibility;
-
relationships, community, and proximity as essential social dimensions of dwelling;
-
the challenges posed by technology, urban life, and digital society;
-
transformations of urban and domestic life in the technological age;
-
intercultural and interreligious dialogue for the care of our common home.
The Call for Abstracts is now closed. Authors who submitted proposals have been notified by email and are invited to complete their registration through the official conference website.
Join us for a day of critical reflection and dialogue as we rethink how we inhabit the world—together.
