Academic Conference on Being and Individuality

On December 4th and 5th the Research Group Rediscovering the Individual, organized the Conference "Twilights of the Individual? Being and Relationality in the Face of Contemporary Challenges". The event brought together leading scholars from Europe to explore the evolving concept of individuality in philosophy, theology, sociology, and contemporary ethics.
The conference opened on December 4th at 3:30 pm with keynote presentations by Professor John Haldane from the University of St. Andrews, Scotland, discussing "Conceiving the Human Individual," followed by Michele Alessandrelli (CNR-ILIESI, Rome) on "Individual in Action in Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics."
On December 5th, starting at 9:30 am, a series of sessions examined individual identity and personhood from various philosophical perspectives. Speakers included Simone Guidi (CNR-ILIESI), Antonio Petagine (Università Roma Tre), Alessia Giacone and Gennaro Luise (both from Pontifical University of the Holy Cross), addressing topics such as Scholastic thought, human rights, process metaphysics, and analytic philosophy.
The afternoon session of December 5th at 3:30 pm featured Claudio Tagliapietra, Bernard Schumacher (Université de Fribourg, Switzerland), and Andrea Bertolini (Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna, Pisa), who discussed sociological, theological, and technological challenges related to individuality, including ethical concerns about artificial intelligence and human life.
